Helplessness

At this moment I am locked out of my car. I parked at the school, walked my kids up to their classroom, and only then realized my keys are sitting inside the locked car. Fortunately my phone is with me, and the wife without whom my whole world would likely come crashing down around me, is on her way to rescue me from my own carelessness.
As I sit here on the rear bumper of my car, I cannot help but come face to face with just how helpless we humans truly are. Without that little piece of metal, I cannot get to work to earn money to support my family. The only reason my wife can come to help me is that my phone was attached to my belt. My jacket is keeping me from freezing in the 40 degree weather.
I keep saying "my my my". But none of these things are me. God could take them away as easily as he did the car key. If I were left here naked and alone, with no one to help me, I would, most likely, slowly and painfully die.
Helpless. Totally helpless.
Without the graces that God gives us - a society for support, neighbors to help, clothing and cars and keys and telephones - without these things we are helpless. Without God we are helpless.
We all know this, deep in our souls. But we usually keep our focus on the things. The fear of helplessness leads us to hoarding. It leads to greed. It leads to an unhealthy sense of self-reliance.
What we need to realize is that even if we lose all these things, we still have God. He can lift us up from even the lowest state. All we have to do is trust Him.
