In the last year and a half, our family has developed a special devotion to St. Therese, the Little Flower. This came from a couple of different sources. Our priest has a devotion to Therese, and there is a statue of her in our church. Beyond that, though, is a little story.
Mom has always admired Mother Theresa. She was - not surprisingly - moved by Come Be My Light. On discussing that book, she noted that Mother Theresa had been devoted to the Little Flower. So as a present, I purchased for Mom The Story of a Soul. This furthered Mom on a wonderful spiritual journey.
Moved by the impact it had on my wife, I purchased the recent DVD of the movie Therese. We watched as a family and loved it. In particular our daughter was enthralled and has watched the film at least 10 times and has declared her desire to become a Carmelite. (I think her desire to be a mother is winning her heart at the moment, but whatever God wills. She is only 9 and has a long time to discern.)
In any event, our daughter went on to read the children's version of the life of Therese at least a half dozen times and then read Story of a Soul.
So St. Therese became a regular point of discussion among our family. Shortly thereafter, I was praying a novena to St. Therese. (You can find the novena here - http://www.ewtn.com/therese/novena.htm#pray). It was the last day of the novena and a school day. My habit was to drop the kids off at school and then walk down to the church to pray. As I was walking my daughter to her class, she turned to me and said, "Wow, look at those beautiful roses!" We must have passed that rose bush almost every school day that year, but I had never noticed it and she had never commented on it. If you are aware of the commonly held belief about prayers to the Little Flower, then you won't be surprised to know that the special intention of that novena was answered in a very overt way.
I'm not trying to say the roses were a miracle. I think that many times things such as that are God nudging us to pay attention to the little everyday signs of His love all around us. Well, I did pay attention that time, and my family's devotion to the Little Flower remains strong.
