Thoughts on Gifts

There are gifts that support the family and gifts that pull it apart. In my years as a parent I have given both kinds to my children. How do some gifts do harm to the family? In one of two ways. Some gifts encourage addictive and antisocial behavior. Many high tech gifts such as video games and music players fall into this category.
One of the best gifts we gave our kids was, of all things, a foosball table. It is physical, it requires multiple players, it is fun for adults, it teaches sportsmanship and positive competitiveness.
Other good gifts:
Books
Sports equipment
Arts and crafts
Board games
Some not so good gifts:
Video games
Cell phones, mp3 players and other electronics
toys based on the latest popular movie (usually out of style before they are opened)

The best gifts of all? A rosary, a crucifix, a saint statue or book. Anything that will lead them deeper into the faith.
