The Vatican is generating virulent criticism for this http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article5473588.ece. My initial reaction was dismay at what seems at first glance moral equivalency in a case where Israel is clearly acting in self-defense. However, first glances are often wrong.
Read all of the statements of the Vatican. Essentially, the Church is against war, in all its forms, as it should be. Specifically to the instance in question, they are criticizing an action of Israel that is, upon further reflection, morally wrong. It is easy to say that the Palestinians should never have hidden weapons in the U.N. School, and that is true. And it is to Israels credit that they provided prior warning of the attack. But they had to know that Hamas would not let children be removed from the school. With that knowledge, they should never have launched the attack. If a criminal were using a child as a shield, a police officer would be wrong to fire, and this situation is no different. Sometimes even the good guys do the wrong thing, and that is the case with Israel here.
