Take a Cold Shower

Take a cold shower. Not in the summer, but in the winter, when the water comes out frigid. As you hesitate to step in, dreading the experience to come, think of how Christ suffered in the Garden, dreading his passion that was to come. Then duck into the spray. Shudder, perhaps violently as the icy water strikes your back, and think of the scourge, as it cut into the flesh on Our Lord. Wash your hair, and as needles of cold water strike your scalp, think of Christ's crown of thorns, piercing his brow. Now wash yourself, and as you struggle to complete the task without turning the hot water on and rescuing yourself from the discomfort, think about Christ struggling underneath the weight of His cross. Surely He was tempted to excercise His divine power and simply walk away from this horrible end? Finally, as you rinse the soap from your body, shivering in the cold, think how Christ must have shivered on an spring afternoon, sweat and blood drying on his naked body, unable even to pull his knees up or wrap his arms around himself, cold and pinned to the cross.
Now dry yourself off, put on a warm robe, and take comfort in the Resurrection.
